BEL CANTO AT CARAMOOR PRESENTS THE TWO OTELLOS
The Caramoor International Music Festival
Celebrates Verdi Centennial
"Bel Canto at Caramoor" is celebrating its fifth anniversary, along with the anniversary years of Verdi (1813-1901) and Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) with expanded programming this season. To mark the occasion, The Caramoor International Music Festival will offer an opportunity to hear Verdi's Shakespearean masterpiece, Otello, in juxtaposition with Rossini's rarely performed version of the same story. Will Crutchfield, Caramoor's Director of Opera, will conduct Rossini's Otello on Saturday, July 7 at 8:00pm and Verdi's Otello on Saturday, July 21 at 8:00pm. Both performances will be held in the 1,750-seat Venetian Theater on the bucolic Caramoor estate in Westchester County.
"Rossini and Verdi are the giants at either end of Italian opera's greatest era, like Haydn and Beethoven in the Classical period. Hearing these settings in juxtaposition will show that they are more closely related than most musicians know, and enrich the understanding of both," said Will Crutchfield.
Tickets are from $85.00 - $32.50, and may be purchased by calling the Caramoor Box Office at 914.232.1252, or going to www.caramoor.com. For press tickets, please contact Milina Barry PR at 212.420.0200.
Also during the 2001 Festival, "Bel Canto at Caramoor" will offer related concerts in the intimate Music Room theater and Spanish Courtyard: On Friday, June 29 at 8:00pm, "Bel Canto at Caramoor" will present Shakespeare's Songs. Composers of every age have been inspired by the poetry of Shakespeare. Settings of the Bard's verse from the past three centuries will augment the Otello performances. Composers will include Arne, Bishop, Purcell, Haydn, Schubert, Mendelssohn, R. Strauss, Honegger, Poulenc and Ives.
On Thursday, June 28 and Thursday, July 12 at 4:30pm in Caramoor's Spanish Courtyard, a stellar array of young performers chosen from the Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artists Ensemble will present two programs of Scenes and Songs by Verdi & Bellini
